UK spent $904m on failed plan to expel migrants
The UK government has spent £715m ($904m) on a never-realised plan to deport illegal migrants to Rwanda, RIA Novosti reports
According to the British government’s website, the country’s new authorities informed on July 6th that they had abandoned plans to expel illegal immigrants to Rwanda and were ready to establish a special command to combat illegal migration.
The government stressed that from April 2022 to June 2024, the British Home Office spent a total of 715m Pounds on an unrealised plan to deport migrants. In this amount, £290m was set aside to support Rwanda’s economic development and the process of receiving and accommodating migrants. A further £220m was supposed to be paid for this purpose, but the payments were cancelled due to the abandonment of the deportation plan.
Also, of this £715m, another £50m is spent on securing flights to Rwanda, £95m on optimising accommodation facilities and £280m on ‘other fixed costs’ related to setting up electronic systems and legal fees.
