Two elk died after being entangled in barbed wire on Belarusian-Lithuanian border

Another incident with the death of animals occurred on the section of the Belarusian-Lithuanian border – as reported by the State Border Committee of Belarus in its official Telegram channel

“The Belarusian border guards found the corpses of two elk near the Lithuanian barbed fence. Trying to overcome the wire, the animals were injured and died,” commented the border department.

An elk got entangled in a barbed wire and died from injuries near the fence close to the village of Motyli, Shchuchin District. Another incident happened near the village of Subbotniki, Ivye District. The animal managed to overcome the ‘thorny wire’ but lost a lot of blood and died.

Environmental organisations have repeatedly called on the EU member states to refuse from installing dangerous barriers on their territory. A barbed wire on the migration routes of wild animals becomes an insurmountable obstacle and often leads to their death but does nothing to resolve the refugee crisis.
