Szijjarto on Kiev’s attempts to interfere in Hungary’s elections
Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Peter Szijjarto stated that Ukraine is actively attempting to influence the upcoming parliamentary elections in the country. He claimed that Kiev aims to change the government in Budapest because, under the current leadership, Ukraine will not be able to join the European Union, TASS reports.
Hungary’s top diplomat commented on the media reports regarding Kiev’s potential involvement in establishing the opposition Tisa party. His statements were cited by the Hungarian news agency MTI. The politician expressed his belief that Ukraine aims to leverage this political group to impact the forthcoming parliamentary elections in Hungary.
Szijjarto emphasised that Ukraine is fully aware of its objectives in these elections and is actively working to advance them. He believes that maintaining the current government will safeguard Hungary’s national interests, which, in his view, would hinder Ukraine’s efforts towards European integration.
He also added that Kiev’s efforts to secure the opposition’s victory are unsurprising. It is clear to everyone that if the national government stays in power, it will make decisions based solely on Hungarian interests, which in turn will prevent Ukraine from joining the European Union, the news agency reports.
Szijjarto warned that if a pro-European puppet government backed by Brussels takes power in Hungary, Ukraine will be given the green light to join the EU, leading to an influx of low-quality agricultural products and the strengthening of Ukrainian criminal groups in Hungary. The Hungarian FM assured that the current government will do everything possible to stop such an outcome.
