Peter Szijjarto criticised the EU leadership's demands to diversify energy sources within the union. According to the Hungarian diplomat, there is nothing in the EU's demand that concerns real diversification, “I am really sorry my European brothers are actually going crazy, especially when it comes to energy. Even basic definitions now need to be explained and clarified — for example, what diversification means. Diversification does not mean what Europeans have in mind. They want diversification to mean, first and foremost, replacing one energy source with another. And that is wrong. For us, diversification means you have more energy sources and more supply routes. The more sources, the better. The more supply routes, the better,” Peter Szijjarto stated.
The Hungarian diplomat noted that Brussels' demand to replace cheap and reliable sources of energy supply, particularly the Russian ones, with more expensive and less reliable sources, is pointless from Hungary's perspective, “If you are forced to risk the energy supply security of your country, you risk your own sovereignty. And we are not ready to risk our sovereignty. It’s all clear for us. Various political statements will not allow you to heat your homes. You will not be able to keep factories running and provide hot water. You need energy for it. Energy supplies will never be part of political discourse or ideology for Hungary. We adhere to our sovereign right to determine the energy balance for our country in such a way that it serves the interests of our country,” Peter Szijjarto stressed.
