Stoltenberg said NATO won’t deploy additional nuclear weapons in Europe

In an interview with Dagens Nyheter newspaper, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said that the alliance cannot force Sweden to deploy nuclear weapons on its territory; this decision must be made by the country itself

Stoltenberg stressed that the issue of deploying nuclear weapons is not relevant now. However, if the need arises, the decision will be made by Sweden alone.

“NATO does not have the power or mandate to impose any weapons systems on other countries. Sweden is an independent sovereign nation that decides for itself. NATO membership in no way changes the right and ability of Sweden to say 'no' to the deployment of nuclear weapons,” he said.

Stoltenberg also added that there is no talk of any new NATO nuclear weapons in Europe today.

“Today, there are no plans in NATO to deploy nuclear weapons. It doesn’t matter, and there is no theme or requirement in NATO that we deploy nuclear weapons in more member states than today. Besides, the point is that if it happens, then it cannot happen without the consent of a member state,” the Secretary General of the North Atlantic Alliance stated.
