Spanish PM plans to ban non-EU citizens from buying flats
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez will propose a ban on the purchase of houses in the country by people who are not citizens of the European Union, as part of a programme to combat housing shortage, Bloomberg reports
"The government will propose prohibiting non-EU foreigners from buying houses in our country, when neither they nor their families live here and therefore they are speculating," Mr. Sanchez said at a Socialist Party rally.
According to the politician, non-EU citizens purchased about 23,000 houses and apartments in Spain in 2023.
Earlier, Prime Minister said he wanted to limit the purchase of houses by citizens of non-EU countries without Spanish residence and charge a 100 percent tax on purchases.
The measures to limit and potentially ban foreign acquisitions are part of an attempt to fight a growing housing crisis.
