Spanish authorities support idea of mass legalisation of migrants
The Spanish government is ready to support the initiative on the mass legalisation of hundreds of thousands of migrants amid the problems caused by the new regulations on foreigners coming into force, RIA Novosti reports citing El País newspaper
According to media reports, a popular legislative initiative to legalise around 400,000 foreigners is being considered the best way to address gaps in the new immigration regulations, which can drive thousands of people into an illegal situation.
The government is considering adopting the initiative to compensate for the ‘failures’ of regulatory reform and avoid increased marginalisation.
At the same time, it should be noted that the initiative carries risks given the growing anti-immigration sentiment in Europe. However, the government expects its status as an expression of civil society’s will to protect it from potential criticism in Brussels.
