Signatures being collected in Latvia for its withdrawal from Ottawa Convention

A campaign has been launched to collect signatures in favour of Latvia exiting the Ottawa Convention, which prohibits the use of anti-personnel mines, TASS reports

Signatures are being collected on the portal of public initiatives. It is noted that the representative of the initiative, Atis Stankevics, wants Latvia to realistically assess its military defence strategy. In his opinion, in modern conditions the Baltic country needs to reconsider its membership in the Ottawa Convention on anti-personnel mines, joined by Latvia in 2005.

Supporters of withdrawal from the convention believe that in the event of such a step, Latvian society would gain a sense of security that if an attack by a potential aggressor occurs, then anti-personnel mines will be used to protect the border.
