According to the head of the Russian defence department, the situation currently observed in Afghanistan is still a serious challenge to security in Central Asia. Shoigu recalled the activities of international terrorist organisations.

“Against the background of the ongoing armed confrontation, the socio-economic situation is deteriorating in this country, the ideology of religious radicalism is being implanted, drug trafficking and cross-border crime are flourishing,” he stated.

The Russian side, in turn, has a positive attitude towards any initiatives aimed at resolving the situation in Afghanistan. Moreover, the Russian Federation is taking measures necessary to ensure security in the Central Asian region.
