Sergeyenko: state support for families with children, protection of motherhood and childhood among Belarus’ national brands

State support for families with children, protection of motherhood and childhood are the national brand of Belarus, and the state logically prioritises investments in the areas that have a significant impact on national security, economic growth, and ultimately on the quality of life – as stated by Igor Sergeyenko, the Chairman of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly, during his today’s meeting with deputies and members of the Belarusian Association of Parents with Many Children dedicated to Mother's Day, sb.by reports

Welcoming the guests, Mr. Sergeyenko noted that the meeting was taking place on the eve of the most touching and emotional autumn holiday: Mother's Day, “The President of our country has repeatedly stressed that motherhood is the highest vocation of a woman, and reverence for the mother and respect for traditional family values are among the key foundations of our modern society. I think we are all ready to agree with these wonderful words of our Head of State, who confirms the commitment of the state to support childhood and motherhood with real actions.”

The Chairman of the House of Representatives drew attention to the fact that much is being done at the state level in Belarus to support large families with three or more children, “You perfectly well remember the President's words when he said that the third child is his, referring to the state support. I am sure that many of you feel this support, which includes the family capital (introduced in sovereign Belarus as a form of support), the targeted social assistance, and the paid three-year maternity leave. Our legislative and other regulatory acts take into consideration issues related to the support of childhood and motherhood.”

Mr. Sergeyenko stressed that, over the past six years, the number of large families has grown significantly, and there are more than 120 thousand of them at present (in 2019, there were 106,000 large families in the country). In this regard, he noted that 400,000+ boys and girls are raised in large families now, and Belarus ranks 25th in the ranking of the most comfortable countries for motherhood among 179 states.

“Statistics show that young people get married later every year, and they give birth to their first child later as well. Young people strive to succeed in life, as they believe, and then create families and have children. Nevertheless, a sociological survey conducted by the Institute of Sociology of the National Academy of Sciences in Q1 2025 suggests that family and children remain priorities for young people. This indicates that our traditional family values are among the priorities of our youth, which is naturally the result of the family upbringing,” Mr. Sergeyenko stated.
