Scientists reported global ocean surface temperature approached all-time high

The European Copernicus Climate Change Service reported that the global ocean surface temperature in May reached the second-highest level ever recorded, TASS reports

Scientists attribute the high surface temperature of the global ocean to the fact that they absorb 25-30 percent of the carbon dioxide emissions in the atmosphere, as well as around 90 percent of the excess heat. According to climatologists, it is for this reason that the ocean remains the main natural brake on global warming.

However, scientists are concerned that this could lead to drastic changes in marine ecosystems. For instance, the warming and acidification of the global oceans can prevent coral polyps from capturing calcium and carbonic acid ions, potentially leading to the destruction of coral reefs. Climatologists also believe that these processes could accelerate the reproduction of unicellular algae, which would dramatically reduce the oxygen supply to other sea creatures.
