Scientist: 250 sunken treasure ships off the coast of Portugal

There are 250 sunken treasure ships off the coast of Portugal, one of them can store 22 tonnes of gold and silver, RIA Novosti reports

Alexandre Monteiro, an archaeologist from the New University of Lisbon, said that he had compiled a database according to which there are a total of 8,260 shipwrecks off the coast of Portugal that have been wrecked since 1500, when documentation began. The scientist complained that the state does not yet have mechanisms to protect such finds from treasure hunters.

Mr. Monteiro added that, according to his information, there is a Spanish ship off the coast of the Portuguese peninsula of Troy. It sank in 1589, with 22 tonnes of gold and silver on board.
