Actually, this is not the first initiative of Mr. Fedorov to revoke the recognition of independence of the former Soviet republics: earlier, he submitted a bill to the State Duma to repeal the USSR State Council’s resolution On Recognition of Independence of the Republic of Lithuania. His explanatory note to the document reads that the decision was illegal, since it was taken by an unconstitutional body in violation of several articles of the USSR Constitution.

“We have begun with Lithuania – which is clear: Lithuania is more dangerous for the Russian Federation in terms of the situation related to the Kaliningrad Region, and in confrontation with NATO and the United States. Therefore, Lithuania is more important now, but this does not mean that we will stop here,” Mr. Fedorov stated.

The parliamentarian added that similar steps might be taken in relation to Estonia, Latvia and Ukraine in the future. “There are several arguments for Lithuania to top this list. After the mechanism is worked out, we will apply it to other NATO territories – and beyond – as well. Take, Ukraine, for example; it also illegally left the USSR," Mr. Fedorov added.

According to the deputy, such actions aim to eliminate the threats coming towards Russian from certain post-Soviet countries. As Mr. Fedorov clarified, Russia will not reconsider the recognition of independence of the former Soviet republics that are pursuing a peaceful policy.
