Russia expects record wheat harvest in 2022

SovEcon, a company specialising in the study of agricultural markets, has changed its 2022-2023 forecast for wheat harvest in Russia by 0.9m tonnes, TASS reports

As informed, the wheat harvest in Russia has been revised to a record high of 87.4m tonnes. Earlier, the figure of 86.5m tonnes was named. The growth is due to excellent sowing conditions and good availability of raw materials. Last year, Russia harvested 76m tonnes of wheat.

SovEcon CEO Andrei Sizov explained the weather has had a favourable effect on winter wheat. As a result, the death rates of winter crops were below average. “This factor fully compensates for a significant reduction in acreage by 5 percent last autumn. We expect that a pre-harvest area of winter wheat will reach a new record of 17m hectares,” he said.

Earlier, Russia’s Ministry of Agriculture reported that grain harvests could reach 123m tonnes this year. According to Russia’s Federal State Statistics Service, grain harvests in the country made 121.4m tonnes in 2021, and 133.5m tonnes in 2020.
