As part of a technical visit to Belarus, representatives of the Russian state corporation visited the Belarusian nuclear power plant, where they got acquainted with the existing infrastructure for radioactive waste management.

Bilateral expert consultations were held during which prospects for bilateral interaction in the field of spent nuclear fuel and radioactive waste management were discussed. Russian colleagues shared their experience on the creation of radioactive waste disposal facilities. Moreover, approaches to the selection of sites for such facilities were discussed separately.

The results were summed up in the Energy Ministry. As Belarus’ Deputy Energy Minister Mikhail Mikhadyuk noted, one of the important areas of collaboration is interaction in training personnel for radioactive waste management.

In turn, Gosatomnadzor’s First Deputy Head Leonid Dedul stressed that the Russian experience is of practical use for the Belarusian side, given that the country is preparing a national strategy for radioactive waste management. It is planned that the document will be approved by the end of the year.
