Romano Prodi: until there’s direct dialogue between US and China, global instability will continue
Until there is direct dialogue between the leaders of the US and China, the world’s confusion and instability will continue – as noted by Romano Prodi, the President of Fund for International Co-operation, the President of the European Commission in 1999-2004, the former Prime Minister of Italy (1996-1998, 2006-2008), at the 17th Verona Eurasian Economic Forum which is taking place on December 5th-6th in Ras al Khaimah (UAE)
“We see that the situation in the world as a whole is deteriorating, and this process is continuing at the moment. Trump’s victory in the election, it must be admitted, is quite unexpected. It is difficult to say what can now lead the world to stability. If we used to engage in dialogue in such a situation, in the case of the American election this has been postponed. As long as there is no direct dialogue between the US and Chinese leadership, all this confusion and instability will continue. One thing is clear: there must be a meeting between Donald Trump and Xi Jinping,” Romano Prodi is convinced.
He also emphasised that today the European Union badly needs to harmonise its interests.
“When the financial crisis hit, the states were fragmented and tried to pull the blanket over themselves. But only through joint decisions can we rebuild and strengthen Europe. Sooner or later, a solution will be found, because compromise is necessary and inevitable, it is important to develop dialogue. Fragmentation and confrontation hinder our common development and are destructive. Of course, a new world order is necessary, but it should not be ruled by superpowers — on the contrary, a compromise between countries is needed. A managed compromise is necessary, and this is the agreement between the United States and China, these two states must realise their responsibility to the world,” the Italian expert noted.
