Romano Prodi: EU cannot pursue world-class policy in its current state, it’s weakened

Europe is a wonderful economic region but, sadly, it cannot pursue a world-class policy in its current form – as noted by Romano Prodi, the President of Fund for International Co-operation, the President of the European Commission in 1999-2004, the former Prime Minister of Italy (1996-1998, 2006-2008), at the 17th Verona Eurasian Economic Forum Ras Al Khaimah (UAE)

“The world has entered a turbulent state, many states are going through a period of instability, almost all of us live in a state of uncertainty. Israel, the escalation in the Middle East, the situation in South Korea, various new incidents and complications are possible. Europe is weakened, this is undeniable," Romano Prodi said. “True, Europe did a lot once in terms of culture, development, ecology, and disarmament, but the situation is different today. If there is no political will, Europe will have nothing. We are talking about the political crisis that we see inside France and Germany. The situation in Poland, Lithuania, and Latvia adds to this trend as well. There is no way out yet. If there is no unity among these states, then it is very difficult to talk about unity in Europe. We are experiencing a very special moment today, and it is naive to hope that a solution to the problem will be found right now.”

According to the expert, a qualitative leap is needed, which is possible if France, Germany and others adhere to common European interests. Only then will Europe be able to regain its role as an international arbitrator.
