Romanian MEP called on EU to abandon sanctions against Russia
A possible Presidential candidate in Romania, European Parliament member Diana Shoshoake stressed that the European Union should abandon sanctions against Russia and resume economic relations with Moscow, RIA Novosti reports
In an interview, she noted, “The EU should abandon sanctions against Russia, which primarily harm the European economy. It is vital for the European Union to resume economic relations with Russia, which would contribute to economic growth in the EU.”
Ms. Shoshoake stressed that the anti-Russian sanctions had led to a decrease in industrial production and an increase in energy prices, and they had lowered the living standards in the EU member states. “They [sanctions] have made the European Union uncompetitive, as a result of which industrial production here has significantly decreased, energy prices and, accordingly, the cost of living have increased. The EU citizens have become impoverished," she stated.
The politician criticised the EU's ‘stubborn support’ for Ukraine, calling it illogical, “The EU must abandon hostility and stubbornness in supporting Ukraine despite all evidence and logic. For its part, the European Union should encourage negotiations on peace and the restoration of economic ties with Russia.”
MEP Shoshoake is known in Romania for her harsh statements about foreign policy and criticism of Kiev's pro-Western course. In the spring of 2023, she registered a bill in the Romanian Senate suggesting the termination of the agreement on good-neighbourly relations with Ukraine and the annexation of part of the Ukrainian territories. In response, the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry noted that it was initiating the imposition of sanctions against the politician. Ms. Shoshoake, in turn, stated that she had received threats from the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry because of her initiative.
