Putin: Russia suspends its participation in New START Treaty
Russia is suspending its participation in the New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (New START), but isn’t withdrawing from it – as stated by Russian President Vladimir Putin in his annual address to the Federal Assembly, TASS reports
The Russian leader noted that in order to resume work under the New START Treaty, Russia must understand how the total strike arsenal of the North Atlantic Alliance will be taken into account.
“Before returning to the discussion of this issue [on the continuation of the New START Treaty], we must understand for ourselves what NATO countries such as France and Great Britain still claim, and how we will take into account their strategic arsenals, that is, the combined strike potential of the North Atlantic Alliance,” Vladimir Putin said.
