President of China: AI technology entails unprecedented risks and challenges
Artificial intelligence technologies offer unprecedented opportunities, but they also entail unprecedented risks and challenges – as stated by Chinese President Xi Jinping, RIA Novosti reports
The Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China held a collective seminar on strengthening the development and control of artificial intelligence. It was chaired by Xi Jinping, and China Central Television quoted him as saying, “Artificial intelligence entails unprecedented development opportunities, but also unprecedented risks and challenges.”
The Chinese leader stressed that AI technologies will radically change human production and lifestyle. In this regard, he pointed out the need to accelerate the development and improvement of relevant laws and regulations related to neural network technologies, as well as ethical principles in the country. Xi Jinping noted the importance of creating a technology monitoring system, risk warning and emergency response, and ensuring the safety, reliability and manageability of artificial intelligence.
According to the President, in order for China to seize the initiative and gain advantages in the field of AI, it is necessary to make a breakthrough in basic theories, methods, and tools. “We must continue to strengthen fundamental research, focus on the development of high-performance chips, core software and other key technologies, as well as create an independent, regulated and co-ordinated main software and hardware artificial intelligence system,” he stated.
Xi Jinping added that artificial intelligence could become ‘an international social product that benefits humanity’. He also called for broad international co-operation in the field of AI.
