Polyansky on ICAO report: settling scores with unwanted states frequently practiced by West

The vision of this event and its allegedly objective investigation presented by the ICAO team is rather far from reality – as stated by Dmitry Polyansky, First Deputy Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation to the United Nations, speaking at the UN Security Council

“We have reasons to believe that the so-called ‘fact-finding process’ was nothing more than settling the scores with the unwanted states that the West frequently resorts to,” the diplomat said. He explained the position of the Russian Federation, citing facts regarding the course of the investigation.

The representative also noted, “We regret that contrary to ICAO’s longstanding reputation as a technical body, its Assembly was used as a platform to promote political interests of certain states.”

According to Polyansky, ICAO is rapidly losing its ability to deal with the issues entrusted to it, “We see more and more situations when the ICAO acts in the interests of a small group of states. This sort of inability to properly respond to the problems of civil aviation, leads to a situation when these topics are taken to a non-specialised platform. As a result, the Security Council again has to spend its time on the intrigues of our former Western partners against the unwanted states.”

Polyansky expressed his conviction that international civil aviation and ICAO should not become an instrument of political pressure.
