Political expert comments on events in Kazakhstan

Political expert Aleksei Dzermant has shared his opinion on the events in Kazakhstan and their meaning for Eurasian integration on his Telegram channel

“As a result of the crisis in Kazakhstan, we can really expect strengthening of integration processes in Central Asia. First of all, the country’s renewed elites – led by President Tokayev – will have to confirm their commitment to the allied obligations on their part as well,” he noted.

According to Mr. Dzermant, this may be expressed in a greater degree of compliance in economic issues in the EAEU format, in possible granting of new functions to this organisation in the humanitarian, information and (why not) socio-political sphere. Previously, the leadership of Kazakhstan was strongly against this – insisting that the Eurasian Economic Union is a purely economic integration project. “However, much can change now and it is quite possible that we will face convergence of the EAEU as an economic union and the CSTO as a military-political bloc. In any case, this will be logical and timely,” the political expert believes.
