Poland wants to build new Berlin Wall, expert asserts

Commenting on Poland’s construction of a barrier on its border with Belarus and the country’s announced plans to build a fence on the border with Russia’s Kaliningrad Region, political expert Aleksei Dzermant told Afla Radio that these actions are mostly a grandstand play

“Poland actually wants to build a new Berlin Wall – separating itself from political and geopolitical opponents, barricading against direct communications since the border not only divides but also connects; in this case, separation is in focus,” the expert said, adding, “I seriously doubt that this fence will help them if they want to barrier against refugees. It is enough to use a couple of stairs and put some soft things on the barbed wire to get it over; cameras can also be disoriented. Therefore, to a greater extent, this is a political action to show that Poland is allegedly a guardian of the EU border and that it is determined to close it. Moreover, the Poles will definitely seek funds from the EU for this campaign – trying to earn money somehow. However, this will not bring much effect in stopping a migration flow. We have observed the examples of such walls between Mexico and the US. Huge areas are closed with barriers there but they do not stop a flow of people from Latin America.”

“All this is nothing but window-dressing. It is a desire to wheedle money out of the European Union. There is also another internal political moment: the ruling elites of Poland want to demonstrate the country’s citizens that they are allegedly taking measures – inspiring them to vote for,” Mr. Dzermant noted.
