Poland hit hard by EU

The refusal of the European Union to adopt changes in Polish legislation, supposed to ease disagreements between the EU and Poland on the issue of the judicial system, is a heavy blow for official Warsaw – as noted by the German newspaper Die Welt, RIA Novosti reports

According to the publication, Vice President of the European Commission Vera Yurova, in response to a request from a member of the European Parliament, called the law adopted by Poland ‘inconsistent’ with the EU position. This means that Warsaw is again required to revise the provisions of its legislation. Otherwise, according to Ms. Yurova, Poland will not receive the money.

It is noted that after the visit to Warsaw of the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen it seemed that Poland would eventually receive 35bn Euros from the ‘COVID’ fund of the EU. The authors emphasised that the need for a tranche is due to the tense economic situation because of high inflation in the country, which reached 13.9 percent, and the flow of Ukrainian refugees, whose number is about four million. Meanwhile, Brussels decided not to withhold funds for Poland, which has become the ‘legislator of European policy’ towards Kiev.

Experts told European politicians that the law adopted by Poland introduces only cosmetic changes to the legislation and bypasses several contentious issues raised by Brussels.
