PACE rapporteur on problems with media freedom in Europe

Mogens Jensen, General Rapporteur of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) on Freedom of the Media and Safety of Journalists, noted that Europe can no longer be considered a safe haven for media freedom – as reported by the Council of Europe’s press service, according to RIA Novosti

Jensen stressed that the media freedom situation in Europe needs to be changed in some way.

“Council of Europe member states must ensure that the standards they have endorsed are upheld and make more commitments at the international level to protect media freedom; it’s time to act!” he said.

Moreover, he recalled that May 3rd is World Press Freedom Day.

“We used to say that without effective media freedom there can be no true democracy; but year after year, World Press Freedom Day also reminds us of dozens of journalists killed, hundreds imprisoned, thousands threatened, intimidated and abused around the world, including in Europe,” the PACE rapporteur stated.
