Orban: war will come to Europe if Ukraine becomes EU member
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has stated that he is against Ukraine's membership in the European Union, noting that this would mean war in Europe, TASS reports
Upon arrival at the informal EU summit in Copenhagen, Mr. Orban said, “No membership [of Ukraine in the EU], because it will, firstly, mean that a war will come to the European Union and, secondly, the EU money will head to Ukraine.”
The Hungarian politician pointed out that the decision to oppose Ukraine's accession to the EU is not his personal one, but of ‘Hungarian people’, since Hungary is ‘a democratic country’. Mr. Orban added that Ukraine's association with the European Union is acceptable, but ‘membership is too much’.
Earlier, the Hungarian authorities repeatedly informed that they would not allow Ukraine's hasty accession to the EU, because this would destroy the European economy and lead to a direct armed conflict with Russia. At the EU summit in Brussels on June 26th, Mr. Orban blocked the general statement in support of Ukraine, which gave the green light to start negotiations on the country’s accession to the EU.
