Opinion: West seeks to destroy family values in Belarus and Russia, as singles are easier to manage

Belarus and Russia have united efforts in resisting the policies of unfriendly countries aimed at distorting traditional values and degrading society – as stated by Aleksei Avdonin, an expert at the Belarusian Institute for Strategic Studies

Speaking of the goals pursued by the West by destroying the value base of Belarus and Russia and the methods used by foreign psychological operations centres, Mr. Avdonin noted, “It is primarily necessary to understand that the West, when trying to destroy traditional values, is actually trying to destroy our so-called identifiers. Simply speaking, the latter make it possible to clearly see who is the enemy and who is the friend. The work of all Western centres of psychological operations is aimed at ensuring that the population of a country (not necessarily Belarus or Russia) recognises that, for example, the action of NATO troops is a blessing, that they supposedly bring peace and freedom. Differently speaking, they replace the concept, including history. They make enemies and traitors out of veterans of the Great Patriotic War, and they present Bandera followers as heroes. This is also a substitution of identification.”

The expert stressed that Belarus and Russia are united by a centuries-old common history, common spiritual and traditional values, careful attitude towards older generations, parents, children, marriage, family, church and Orthodoxy. The neoliberal values aggressively imposed by Western countries are alien to the mentality of the peoples of Belarus and Russia, their traditions and customs. “Such ‘values’ are weapons in the hands of unfriendly countries, lead to division and destruction of society, provoke generational conflict and destabilise the state,” he said.

Mr. Avdonin added that the destruction of family values within the Union State is one of the main goals of the collective West, “Traditional family values envisage the family as an economic unit of society. The family is inclined to generate and accumulate income for future generations – so that they can study, have access to accommodation and enjoy a further growth. All this is generated within the family. However, when traditional values are being destroyed, when the ideas that a family is not needed, that there should be no relationship between a man and a woman, that there is no need in children are promoted, then only loneliness follows. These lonely people are extremely easy to manage, in fact.”
