Opinion: Vatican overstepped all boundaries in its anti-communism during WWII

An unchristian, very depressing and very anti-Semitic position during the Second World War is actually a black spot on the Roman Catholic Church and the mantle of the pontiff who headed it in those years – as noted by Professor Igor Marzalyuk, the Chairman of the Standing Commission on Education, Culture and Science of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of Belarus, the Doctor of Historical Sciences and a corresponding member of the National Academy of Sciences

The scientist noted that the state and society respect believers’ religious feelings in Belarus. “Meanwhile, an unchristian, very depressing and very anti-Semitic position during the Second World War is actually a black spot on the Roman Catholic Church and the mantle of the pontiff who headed it in those years. Naturally, the Vatican was consistently anti-communist, the USSR enmity toward God did not allow it to be different. However, in its anti-communism, the Vatican overstepped all boundaries during WWII,” he said.

Mr. Marzalyuk reminded, “Back in the 1920s, a secret agreement was signed between the Vatican and the leadership of the 2nd RzechPospolita. The document clearly stated that the Polish state’s most important task and historical mission was to spread Catholicism in Western Belarus and Western Ukraine.”
