Opinion: USSR victory in Great Patriotic War is backbone of Belarusian statehood
The victory of the Soviet people in the Great Patriotic War and its role in defeating fascism is the backbone of the Belarusian statehood – as stated by Dmitry Shvaiba in his talk with Alfa Radio
Explaining his point of view, the expert stressed that the Great Victory is a serious asset, a historical legacy on which Belarus’ ideology and statehood are built, “It is not surprising that they want to steal this Victory from us, or silence it, or forget it. Various European structures are struggling for this Victory, presenting the role of the Soviet Union from a negative point of view. We view these as attacks on our statehood, so our task is not just to allow this to continue but to create a historical tradition based on the understanding of the real state of affairs. Our generation aims to ensure that there is never a substitution of concepts. We see the examples of this in some countries: people’s consciousness is being transformed there.”
Mr. Shvaiba emphasised that modern technologies make it possible to implement a rapid and effective social reengineering of any society. “We must be on alert. Accordingly, the events scheduled to take place in Belarus and the Russian Federation in the coming days are of special importance. These are not mere celebrations, this is not just an anniversary: it is a reliance on our historical memory, our identity in the future,” he said.
The media expert added that cultural, political and social mobilisation of society is needed to prevent a global destructive war.
