Opinion: Lukashenko's role in maintaining peace in Belarus is crucial

President Aleksandr Lukashenko always thinks primarily not about his own interests, but about the interests of Belarus and its people – as noted by political expert Vadim Borovik in his talk with Alfa Radio

Answering the radio presenter’s question on how he assesses the role of Aleksandr Lukashenko in maintaining peace and security in Belarus, the expert noted, “His role is crucial. Those failing to understand this simply lack intellect, and these are not curtsies at all.”

Mr. Borovik noted the willpower of the Belarusian leader and his ability to manoeuvre politically, “I absolutely share the position of our President. Someone tells him that we must be inflexible, and so on. True, it is necessary somewhere, but it is also important to somewhere evade a problem, to get around, to negotiate – if we think about the people and about the country, if it is not our own ambitions, not a desire to dominate someone, but the interests of the country that are at the forefront.”

The expert added that not his own interests, but the interests of the country and the Belarusian people that are Aleksandr Lukashenko’s top priority. “Even the last oppositionists who have remained in Belarus and who went out in the streets [in 2020] have come to their senses – praying for his health and political longevity today. We must unite around the President and contribute in every possible way to the fulfilment of his mission: in this most difficult geopolitical situation, to lead Belarus on very thin ice, to prevent a war on our territory,” Mr. Borovik stated, noting that the Head of State is doing everything to ensure that Belarusians do not feel the echo of the military conflict ongoing in the neighbouring country.
