Opinion: Latvian authorities can only swear and demolish monuments

The Latvian authorities cannot fight against living people, so they demolish monuments – as noted by a deputy of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly, Oleg Gaidukevich, in his talk with Alfa Radio

In Latvia, a part of the Friendship Mound memorial – located near the Russian-Belarusian border – was destroyed. “This is blasphemy and an insult to memory. It is disgustingly, meanly and blackguardly. The Latvian authorities have demolished the monument to the liberators who saved their country from fascism. It is terrible," the speaker said.

Mr. Gaidukevich believes this act indicates the weakness of the Latvian state. “The Latvian government is weak, it can do nothing and it has no influence. Nobody is interested in its opinion. Latvian authorities can only swear and demolish monuments. People are not developing their economy there, and they have ruined political ties with Belarus and Russia. Even the European Union does not view Latvia seriously, since it is a freeloader country,” he said.

The deputy noted that the Latvian authorities cannot fight against living people, so they demolish monuments. “A strong state respects history and protects it,” he stressed.

According to the MP, the Latvian people do not support their government, “They adore Belarusians, our country and want to live peacefully with us.”

The Friendship Mound memorial was erected at the junction of the three countries in 1959 in memory of the co-operation of the Russian, Belarusian and Latvian peoples as part of the Great Patriotic War partisan detachments.
