Opinion: Europe will not be strong until it repairs relations with Belarus and Russia

Belarus wants Europe to be independent and defend the interests of its own people – as noted by a deputy of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly, Oleg Gaidukevich, in his talk with Alfa Radio

According to the parliamentarian, all problems in other European countries are due to their loss of sovereignty. “Belarus does not want to interfere in the affairs of Europe, we are not interested in who wins the elections there, and so on. Meanwhile, European politicians are fond of controlling the elections in Belarus in their own interests. Our country primarily wants Europe to be independent and defend the interests of its own people. All the EU's problems are due to the loss of sovereignty,” Mr. Gaidukevich stated, recalling a situation occurred on the side-lines of the 77th session of the UN General Assembly.

“A great number of foreign representatives wished to hold bilateral meetings with the Belarusian and Russian foreign ministers, Vladimir Makei and Sergei Lavrov. Later they openly said that they had been instructed not to meet with the foreign ministers of Belarus and Russia. How is that possible? Why a representative of France, Italy or any other country cannot meet with someone with whom he considers it necessary to discuss, for example, trade and economic ties? What kind of sovereignty can we talk about here? Imagine for a second whether someone can guide the President of Belarus, Aleksandr Lukashenko, in his meetings. This is absurd. The Belarusian leader has always held meetings with those with whom he considered it necessary for the good of our country and our people,” the deputy noted.

Mr. Gaidukevich stressed that Europe will not be strong until it repairs relations with Belarus and Russia. It will continue getting weaker with each passing day. “The countries of Europe should remember that we all live on the same continent, and we will not get away from each other even in a century. Good relations need to be maintained with each other to ensure development. That is what Belarus wants, and the key to these good relations is that Europe should be sovereign,” he added.
