Opinion: Belarus’ President doing everything possible to cool ‘hotheads’ of our opponents

During a large-scale patriotic forum – If We Are United – held on September 17th, President of Belarus Aleksandr Lukashenko said that on the eve of the presidential elections in Belarus, fugitive opponents are developing various options for how to stir up society again. Political scientist Piotr Petrovsky told Alfa Radio why this issue was raised again in the West.

The expert noted that the President’s speech at the forum is not just about our future, but has a more global and fundamental meaning, “It deals with the existence of Belarus as a whole. The information that the President announced publicly was aimed to convey a message to some ‘hotheads’: if someone tries to attack Belarus and destabilise the situation in our country, WWIII will begin. And the blame will be not on Belarus, but on the provocateur.”

Piotr Petrovsky recalled that Belarus has tactical nuclear weapons (TNW), and recently Russia and Belarus adopted a document that regulates its use.

“And so those in the West believe that red lines can be stretched in different directions. Meanwhile, Aleksandr Lukashenko reminded that our red line is Belarus’ state border. Therefore, it will not work here as it happened with the Kursk Region. Provoking, involving, questioning our sovereignty and independence, trying to use a loophole before the elections and destabilise our society is equal to playing not just with fire, but with nuclear fire,” the political scientist added.

He also expressed hope that this diplomatic message, which was sent by the Belarusian leader and envisaging one principle — it’s easier to prevent the problem from happening than to solve it later — will do its job. As a result, those ‘hotheads’ will lower their temperature and stop engaging in provocations in order to expand the combat zone. The analyst stressed that Belarus’ President is doing everything to cool them down.
