According to the expert, the normal functioning of all body systems is impossible without a healthy liver. “It participates in metabolism, purifying the blood from toxins and harmful substances, and also promotes the production of bile necessary for digestion,” she explained.

Ms. Sinichenko named products that are good for the liver:

Garlic contains compounds that help activate liver enzymes responsible for detoxification.

Grapefruit is rich in antioxidants and also reduces inflammation in the liver.

Beet contains betaine, which helps eliminate toxins and improve gallbladder function.

Carrot is a source of beta-carotene, which is an antioxidant and protects liver cells.

Green tea contains catechins, which have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.

Cruciferous vegetables (broccoli, cauliflower and Brussels sprouts) are rich in useful compounds that help the liver to remove toxins.

Avocado is a source of healthy fats and antioxidants that help protect liver cells.

Lemon and lime stimulate the production of bile and help remove toxins.

Olive oil contains healthy fats and antioxidants that protect liver cells.

Turmeric is a source of curcumin, which has powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.

The doctor also named foods that undermine liver health, “Alcohol is the main enemy of the liver. Minimise the consumption of processed foods, since they contain a lot of sugar, salt, fats and artificial additives harmful to the liver. Avoid sugary drinks — such as sodas, fruit juices, and energy drinks: they are packed with sugar, which can lead to fatty liver disease. Do not get carried away with fried foods: they contain a lot of harmful fats and can provoke inflammation in the liver. Trans fats are also harmful, so there should be no margarine, pastries, or fried foods in the diet. Avoid too much red meat: eating it in large quantities increases the risk of developing liver disease.”
