New Ebola outbreak declared in Congo three years after last one

On September 4th, the Democratic Republic of the Congo declared a new outbreak of Ebola, a deadly virus disease, three years after the previous one three years after the previous one, stating that currently there are 28 suspected cases and 15 deaths, Reuters reports

Congo’s Healthcare Ministry declared that the samples tested on September 3rd confirmed the presence of the Zaire strain of the virus.

The department also noted that the first sign of the outbreak was the hospitalisation of a 34-year-old pregnant woman with symptoms of high fever and vomiting in Kasai province on August 20th. There is no further information about her condition.

The World Health Organisation stated that the number of cases is likely to increase as the infection continues to spread, noting that Congo has a supply of medicines and 2,000 doses of the Ervebo vaccine, which will be delivered to Kasai to vaccinate people who have been in contact with infected individuals and frontline health workers.
