NATO to strengthen its buildup in the Arctic

Co-operation between Russia and the People’s Republic of China in the Far North does not meet the interests of the NATO countries, and the Alliance intends to strengthen its presence in the region – as stated by NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg during a visit to Canada, RIA Novosti reports

He believes that such actions by Beijing and Moscow challenge NATO, “Beijing and Moscow have also pledged to intensify practical co-operation in the Arctic. This forms part of a deepening strategic partnership that challenges our values and interests. Our answer is a strong and predictable presence in the region,” Stoltenberg said.

NATO Secretary General stressed that ‘Russia’s capabilities in the North are a strategic challenge for us’, and ‘China is expanding its presence in the Arctic. The PRC plans to build the world’s largest icebreaker and is spending tens of billions of US Dollars on energy, infrastructure and research projects in the Far North’.
