As reported, the tests were carried out as part of efforts to expand the DPRK's nuclear arsenal due to more powerful and difficult-to-detect weapons capable of striking US military bases in Guam and Japan.

“North Korea’s official Korean Central News Agency said the country’s military scientists tested the first-stage and second-stage missile engines on Saturday and Tuesday. The report did not say when the new missile system was expected to be completed,” the publication reads.

The tests are a continuation of North Korea's efforts to develop weapons, which – as some analysts say – could be boosted by the escalation of the conflict with the United States.

The DPRK's existing intermediate-range missiles, including the Hwasong-12, are equipped with liquid engines that need to be refuelled before launch, and which cannot remain without fuel for a long time.
