MP named main rule of success for Belarus’ political reform

Draft bills On Amendments to Belarus’ Electoral Code and On Belarusian People's Congress were submitted for public discussion. A deputy of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly, Oleg Gaidukevich, commented on the documents' importance.

Mr. Gaidukevich stressed that discussion of these laws continues the country's political reform that began after the new Constitution was adopted.

“We now need to adopt about 250 bills, and one of the most important of them is the law On Belarusian People's Congress. It is necessary to note in this regard that a success of political reforms in our country is rooted in one important rule: every law should be prepared exclusively for the people and the country, and not in order to please someone. The post–Soviet states’ many-year mistake was an attempt to be like someone else – the US or Europe. It's horrible. We need to take something good from the East and from the West, but go exclusively along our own path – relying on the traditions and previously adopted laws,” he explained.

The deputy outlined one more important rule, “Any reform should be aimed at improvement of processes, and not at destruction and beginning to build anew.”

Mr. Gaidukevich added that the Belarusian People’s Congress is the country’s supreme representative body, and it will determine the course of the state for many years.

“Our President remains the highest executive body, but we are introducing improvements since we want our people to be more involved in the decisions made in the country. This is a huge step forward in the electoral system development. We may share different views, but we must act in the same direction. Otherwise, the country will collapse," the deputy concluded.
