MP: electricity consumption to grow both in real sector of economy and among population

On behalf of the Head of State, the Government is now considering the feasibility of building a third power unit of the existing Belarusian nuclear power plant (BelNPP) or a second nuclear power plant – as noted by Anton Karankevich, a member of the House of Representatives Standing Commission on Industry, Energy, Transport, Communications and Digital Development

“A working group has been set up with the participation of a wide range of interested government agencies and departments, which is preparing materials to study the feasibility of building a new nuclear power plant or a third power unit in the country. Various aspects are taken into account: technological, environmental, economic and social. The task is to finalise the relevant feasibility study in 2025. The main argument for the construction of a new nuclear power plant is the growth of electricity consumption. In 2023, this indicator reached the level of 41.1bn kWh. The positive dynamics continued in 2024, when electricity consumption stood at 43.2bn kWh. Electricity is actively used for the development of energy-intensive industries, electrification of housing stock, and development of electric transport. According to forecasts, electricity consumption will continue to grow both in the real sector of the economy and among the population,” Mr. Karankevich noted.
