Migrant detainees released from US custody due to overcrowded detention facilities
The US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has been forced to release a number of detained illegal migrants because the detention centres have run out of space, TASS reports
CBS News reported, citing ICE data, that 160 detained migrants were released in early February. The agency noted that the expansion of operations aiming to combat illegal migrants has led to a significant number of arrests of foreign criminals, which requires more detention facilities.
According to the internal Department of Homeland Security data, ICE-run migrant detention centres were at 109 percent occupancy on February 4th. About 42,000 migrants were in custody at the time, while the ministry’s network of prison and county jails is documented to have 38,521 beds.
