MFA: Belarus welcomes Poland’s decision to reopen two previously closed checkpoints

Belarus welcomes the Polish authorities’ decision to reopen two previously closed border crossings — as stated by the Foreign Ministry’s spokesman Ruslan Varankov, following a meeting regarding the border situation with EU countries, held on the instructions of the President of Belarus on November 15th, BelTA reports

The meeting was chaired by Prime Minister Aleksandr Turchin and State Secretary of the Security Council Aleksandr Volfovich, involving leadership of the Foreign Ministry, the State Border Committee, the State Customs Committee and KGB.

“Belarus consistently calls on its European neighbours to restore the previous mode of border operation in the interests of ordinary citizens and the development of cross-border co-operation. In this context, we welcome the decision of the authorities of the Republic of Poland to reopen two previously closed checkpoints on the Belarusian-Polish border for the movement of people, vehicles and goods. This decision will have a positive impact, first and foremost, on cross-border trade,” the MFA spokesman stated.

This step is manifesting Poland's constructive attitude, aimed primarily at the aspirations of its citizens, the Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

“Unfortunately, we don’t see a similar approach on the part of the Lithuanian authorities, who continue to ignore the interests of their citizens,” Ruslan Varankov added.

Earlier, the Polish authorities stated that they plan to reopen two border crossings with Belarus in Bobrowniki (Berestovitsa) and Kuznica (Bruzgi), which had been closed in previous years. The relevant order was issued by Polish Interior Minister Marcin Kierwinski.

On November 17th, Poland will begin to allow passenger cars and buses through the checkpoint in Kuznica, and passenger cars, buses and trucks from EU countries and Switzerland through the checkpoint in Bobrowniki.
