Media: young people’s fleeing Ukraine raises concerns about country’s recovery
An increasing number of talented youngsters are leaving Ukraine to pursue studies at European universities, raising concerns about the country’s ability to recover after the conflict, RIA Novosti reports
The Telegraph newspaper reported that a large number of gifted Ukrainian schoolchildren choose to enrol in European universities and leave the country. The article describes this trend as a ‘demographic time bomb’ and a ‘brain drain’.
“There are real concerns over who will rebuild the country once the war is over, if the nation’s youth does not return,” the article reads.
According to the newspaper, along with young men fleeing mobilisation, more and more young girls are leaving Ukraine.
Ukraine’s Deputy Minister of Education and Science Yevhen Kudriavets said that the government’s ability to retain the country’s human capital would be crucial for Ukraine’s survival and economic recovery. He added that so far the number of Ukrainian schoolchildren is only decreasing, and by 2029 the number of first-graders in the country will drop by another 30 percent.
