Media: UK ‘squeezed’ in US-EU trade war

The US is no longer interested in the UK as a trading partner, so London is ‘stuck’ between Washington and Brussels in the ongoing trade war – as noted in the material of the Daily Express newspaper, RIA Novosti reports

The authors of the publication note that British Secretary of State for International Trade, President of the Board of Trade Kemi Badenoch tried to influence US policy on environmental subsidies in the amount of $369bn as part of Joe Biden’s plan to combat inflation.

“Badenoch raised the issue at many levels with US Ambassador to the UK Jane Hartley, Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo, as well as members of the Biden administration and high-ranking officials from both parties,” the publication reads.

British car companies were the first to oppose the US protectionist policies. The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) said there were questionable clauses in Biden’s package that could create an uneven competitive environment, with UK manufacturers and suppliers likely to be hit.

However, as the authors of the publication underline, in response to Badenoch’s actions, a representative of a large American business group said that Washington would not take into account the interests of Great Britain.

“The US is minimally focused on how any of its policies will affect the UK. The UK and the US are very close allies, but politicians in the US just don’t really view the UK as an interesting trade partner and market right now,” the source said.
