According to the Kyodo news agency, the exercise was open to the press and took place at the Yausubetsu training area. The drill involved about 150 members of the Ground Self-Defence Forces stationed in Hokkaido, and approximately 40 US marines from Okinawa.

During the drills, the military conducted a simulation of a mock enemy attack on Japanese outlying islands.

“Japanese and American military personnel checked co-ordination between their systems, with multiple launch rocket systems from the Japanese side firing a total of 24 rockets at a target about 13km away,” the agency said.

It is noted that the drills are a part of the manoeuvres conducted by Japan and the United States from October 1st-14th.
