Media: 10,000 migrants cross US border daily
The number of illegal crossings of the US border exceeded 10 thousand daily recently, and the figure became the largest so far, The Washington Post reports
According to the source, after the end of the emergency regime introduced by the previous administration of US President Donald Trump, migrants consider they can now cross the border unhindered.
"They [migrants] are misinformed. They believe that when it [Title 42 regime] ends, the doors to the United States will be opened, and they can cross. But that is far from the truth,” Severino Martinez Santiago, the Director of the Pan de Vida shelter, said.
One of the migrants, in turn, stressed that no one is actually assisting people at the US border right now, “I have never seen an international group here. There are sick children breathing dust here… Who is supposed to help these children and their mothers?"
According to the new rule, migrants arriving in the United States through the southern border will not be eligible for protection if they cannot prove that they have previously requested refugee status in another country, i.e. in Mexico. Those who fail to prove their right to asylum face immediate deportation from the US to Mexico or their homeland, as well as a five-year ban from entering the United States.
