Makei: new world order should be based on peace

Many sober-minded politicians, including in the West, are now thinking of how to live on and what kind of world order should be. Belarus’ Foreign Minister Vladimir Makei shared his views on the topic after opening of an exhibition dedicated to the genocide of the Belarusian people during WWII

Mr. Makei recalled that, after the USSR collapse in the 1990s, some experts predicted the victory of the Western world and liberal democracy. “They said that the USSR died and this is forever, and there will be no more multipolarity. Today, 30 years later, we see that the theory has not caught on, and it does not meet the reality,” he said.

According to the Foreign Minister, many politicians are now thinking of how to live on, and what kind of world order will suit them. They also agree that a new world order should ensure peace, tranquillity and stability on the planet.

Mr. Makei mentioned that, in May, the Belarusian President touched upon this topic in his letter to the UN Secretary General. “He suggested that we get together and think in the spirit of San Francisco about what we should do to avoid further escalation of the situation, the arms race, and how we can ensure peace and tranquillity on the planet and in our region,” he said, adding, “I think that – without going into details – over time, step by step, many sensible politicians, although there are only a few of them in the West now, will more often give thought to this issue.”
