Lukashenko: we’re always happy to welcome those who sincerely wish to become citizens of Belarus

The President of Belarus has convened a meeting on improving legislation on citizenship and amnesty. According to Aleksandr Lukashenko, the agenda includes issues that have acquired particular sense in our society.

“We always pay close attention to the topic of citizenship,” the President noted. “This is primarily for two reasons. On the one hand, we are worried about the security of our state. On the other hand, respectable and hardworking citizens are the most important wealth of our country. We are always happy to welcome to the Belarusian land those who sincerely wish to become citizens of our country and contribute to its development.”

The Head of State said that over the past five years, about 14,000 people have been granted citizenship of the Republic of Belarus for various reasons, “At the same time, each request for admission to citizenship is closely studied by the relevant services. Issues that require a Presidential decision by law are preliminarily considered by a special commission. People from different states, first of all, of course, from the post-Soviet space, strive to become citizens of Belarus. Anyway, natives of Asia, Europe and even America also come to us.”

Aleksandr Lukashenko recalled that in August 2021 he instructed to expedite the granting of citizenship to Ukrainians, “These are our people. They have connected their lives with Belarus, observing our laws, raising their children and working well in agriculture, education, medicine, and science. About 5,000 Ukrainians have already received Belarusian passports over the year.
