The CIS Heads of State are expected to consider about two dozen items. Ahead of its 35th anniversary next year, the organisation plans to review a number of initiatives to strengthen its international positioning, in particular creating a ‘CIS Plus’ format and granting the Shanghai Co-operation Organisation observer status within the Commonwealth of Independent States.
The meeting’s agenda also includes energy security, military co-operation, border security, as well as combating transnational crime.
The CIS Heads of State joint statement regarding forthcoming 40 years since the Chernobyl disaster is a crucial point for Belarus at the summit. The meeting will discuss co-ordinated actions by the CIS countries when addressing the matter at the UN General Assembly session.
In addition, the summit participants will focus on the CIS current activities. Relevant international documents are expected to be signed following the event.
