Lukashenko: the economy that provides social security for citizens is the main target for the West

In his Address to the Belarusian People and Parliament, President Aleksandr Lukashenko emphasised that the economy is the most important condition for sovereignty and independence

“It could be said simpler, in a concentrated way: give me the economy, and I will do everything else without you. The socially oriented economy has been the foundation of Belarus’ state policy for three decades. This policy is successful, and our people support it. According to all indicators characterising social inequality, Belarus is among the most prosperous countries. We have created a state without oligarchs, prevented the concentration of capital and property in one hand, and all national wealth belongs to the people. Therefore, it is the economy – providing social security for citizens – which is the main target for the West. The issue is not about the difference in mentalities, not about the differences in the political systems of the West and the East. Everything is much simpler and more primitive: no one needs sovereign Belarus or sovereign Russia with a strong economy," the President said.

Aleksandr Lukashenko added, “The possession of huge natural resources along with a high level of industrial production, as well as serious scientific competences are the reason for the desire to eliminate us as competitors. Meanwhile, I am convinced now: they will not succeed! We will stand ground. You see the EU economy is stormy, and they would really like to solve their problems at our expense – as it was in the 1990s. It does not work. We have grown up – becoming wiser and more mature. Great financial experts predicted the collapse of our economy, the collapse of the Rouble, and the impoverishment of our population. At present, when their forecasts have not come true, they need to explain to the citizens of the European Union why Belarus has survived, while they had to save on water, heat and fuel. Moreover, our country has even progressed in a number of areas. Those in the West are looking for objective and subjective factors. It’s up to them! They will never understand the difference between a free liberal society where no one owes anyone anything, and the people who understand their responsibility to the state, their compatriots and future generations.”
