Lukashenko supported establishment of CIS Plus format

The CIS needs to strengthen co-operation with countries and organisations that share similar views to advance a unified international agenda and uphold shared principles and values, President of Belarus Aleksandr Lukashenko said during today’s narrow-format meeting of the CIS Heads of State Council in Dushanbe

Touching upon the issue of strengthening the authority and positioning of the CIS in the international arena, the Head of State underlined, “The deepening of integration efforts among Eurasian countries and the increasing interest from third countries in co-operating with our shared institutions are becoming steady trends. Consider the advancements made by the Shanghai Co-operation Organisation (SCO) in this area, as well as the achievements of the EAEU.”

According to Aleksandr Lukashenko, the Commonwealth of Independent States also needs to strengthen co-operation with countries and organisations that share similar views to advance a unified international agenda and uphold shared principles and values.

“In this context, it is advantageous to give the Shanghai Co-operation Organisation observer status within the CIS. We will consider the relevant application today. We fully support the President of Kazakhstan’s initiative to establish the CIS Plus format,” the Belarusian leader pointed out.

The proposal to establish the CIS Plus format was introduced at the CIS summit held in Moscow in October 2024. Its purpose is to enhance the CIS’ positive image globally and to broaden co-operation with interested countries, their associations and international organisations.
